KEARNEY, Neb. - #Ellen Thommes# tied a school blocking record and the Mavericks took set one at ninth-ranked Nebraska-Kearney Wednesday night but the Lopers won the next two and later a deciding fifth set for a 3-2 win over No. 23 Nebraska-Omaha.
UNK won the match, 28-30, 25-23, 25-23, 21-25, 16-14 to improve to 9-1 while UNO fell to 6-3.
Thommes blocked 14 Loper attacks with 11 assisted blocks and three solo efforts to tie a school single-match record that has stood since 1987. Despite her dominance above the net, the Lopers held her to eight kills and a season-low .129 attack percentage.
#Kelli Goeser had a career-high 22 kills and Sara Kampschnieder had 19 kills and 16 digs for a double-double. Lizzy Mach# had 12 kills.
The match featured 44 tie scores and 17 lead changes. After each team won once in the first two sets, the Lopers were ready to take a 2-1 lead in set three. With the score tied, 17-17, they went on a 6-0 run to lead 23-17 before UNO instantly answered with its own 6-0 run to tie the score. UNK then scored two straight to win the set.
The Mavs won the fourth set to force their first five-set match of the season. They then went up quickly, 3-0 in the decider and then a 4-0 run gave UNK a 6-5 lead. After six ties, the last at 13-13, the Lopers scored three of the last four points to clinch the match.
#Emily Myers# had 51 assists and 15 digs for a double-double for the Mavs and Reicks led a busy back row with a career-high 37 digs. That total tied for the third highest single-match dig total in school history.
The Mavs out-hit UNK, .197 to .156 and the two teams tied each other with 69 kills.
Chelsie Carson led four Lopers in double-figure kills with 17 and Cola Svec had 56 assists.
