Nov 29, 2018 | Men's Soccer
OMAHA, Neb. – Omaha men's soccer head coach Bob Warming announced today that assistant coach Nate Baker is leaving the program to spend more time with his family.
Baker came to Omaha as an assistant for former head coach Jason Mims in 2017. Â In his two seasons with the Mavericks, Baker helped UNO to a 17-14-4 overall record, its first Summit League tournament championship and NCAA Tournament berth. Â In addition to the success on the field, Baker coached three former Mavericks who have played professionally in North America and Europe.
"I have been fortunate to have some terrific men who have worked with me as assistants," said Warming. Â "Nate is one of the people that get me excited about the kind of players and people we can develop in our sport for years to come.
"He will be exceptional either as a head coach or an assistant in his next position, wherever that may be, and we wish him and his family well."
"I am thankful for the two years I spent as a member of Omaha men's soccer program," Baker said. Â "It was an incredible opportunity that helped me grow as a coach, but also as a husband and a father. Â
"I am grateful to Coach Mims and Coach Warming for the parts they played in my time as assistant coach," Baker added. Â "I loved being a part of an ambitious athletic department that cared deeply about our program. More than anything, I will miss the players and helping them reach their goals."
Omaha finished the 2018 campaign 7-8-1 overall and advanced to the Summit League Championship final. Â The Mavericks had six players named to All-Summit League teams.
Warming said the Mavericks will conduct a national search for a new assistant coach.
What former players are saying about Coach Baker
"Coach Baker taught me valuable lessons on the field but more importantly off the field. There is no doubt in my mind Coach Baker will have success in whatever he chooses to do next."
-Â Â Â Xavier Gomez, Omaha midfielder (2013-14, 16-17), Minnesota United second-round draft pick
"I'm thankful for Coach Baker's passion, commitment and sacrifice when it came to coaching for our program. Without his contribution, I don't think we would've had the 2017 season we had, winning the Summit League and reaching the NCAA tournament. His impact on Maverick Soccer will live long past his departure."
-Â Â Â Cole Nelson, Omaha midfielder and captain
