Soccer Quartet Secures Academic All-League Honors

OMAHA, Neb. – A quarter of Omaha men's soccer players – seniors Felipe da Silva and Logan Mendez, junior Mark Moulton, and redshirt sophomore Joseph Ghitis – were named to the 2015 Summit League Men's Soccer Academic All-League team, the conference office announced Wednesday. The Mavericks' four student-athletes on the team were most of any school in the league.
Moulton and da Silva were repeat selections for UNO. Moulton earned the award in 2014, while da Silva previously earned accolades in both 2013 and 2014.
Moulton, who maintains a 3.99 grade point average while pursuing a degree in business administration, turned in a spectacular season in 2015 while earning his second straight Academic All-League honor. He was the only Maverick to start in every match and led the team in points, goals, and assists. The Omaha native earned was named First Team All-Summit League and to the Summit League All-Tournament team this season. He was also honored as a CoSIDA Second Team All-American this season.
Da Silva, who maintains a 3.73 GPA while working on his Master's in economics, earned his third straight academic all-league honor. He capped his senior season with two goals from his central defensive position in 15 games. Da Silva was named the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Award Runner-Up and earned the Don Leahy Senior Career Achievement Award from UNO during the 2014-15. The Rio de Janeiro, Brazil native leaves the UNO program as a three-time First Team All-Summit League selection and was a 2015 CoSIDA Academic All-Region honoree.
Mendez, who maintains a 3.39 GPA while majoring in business administration, earned his first academic all-conference award. He made contributions from every field position throughout his career over 58 starts with 11 goals and 16 assists (38 points), transitioning back to being a forward as a senior to become one of the Summit League's premier strikers. This season he tallied six goals and four assists (16 points). Mendez also earned Second Team All-Summit League honors for his play on the pitch.
Ghitis, who maintains a 3.69 GPA while majoring in business, earned his first academic all-league nomination. This season, the goalkeeper appeared in 10 games with nine starts and had a 4-4-2 record. Ghitis had a 0.90 goals-against average and a .763 save percentage. Last season, he was on the Summit League Academic Honor Roll and was named a Summit League Distinguished Scholar.
This season Omaha posted a 9-6-3 overall record and a 3-2-1 Summit League mark. The Mavericks were second in the Summit League regular season standings and earned their first post-season tournament berth advancing to the league semifinals.
To be eligible for the Academic All-League team, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.30 (on a 4.0 scale), completed at least one full academic year at the current institution and participated in 50 percent of their team's competitions. The men's soccer all-league team is made up of the 11 student-athletes receiving the most votes with all ties standing. The Academic All-League Team were voted on by the institution's faculty athletics representatives and sports information directors.
