OMAHA – Junior forward Derek Johnson was named the Summit League Offensive Peak Performer of the Week on Tuesday afternoon. It marks the first time Johnson has earned the award in his career and the third consecutive week a Maverick has claimed the honor.
Johnson had the best performance of his career Friday night against Oral Roberts, recording his first career brace in Omaha's 3-1 win over the Golden Eagles. The Gig Harbor, Washington, native scored his first goal in the 62nd minute on a great pass from Italo Jenkins before finding the back of the net again just 10 minutes later to give the Mavs a commanding 3-0 lead. Entering the match, Johnson had scored just twice all season, with his last goal coming on Sept. 13.
The Mavs return to action tonight against Drake at 7 p.m. at Caniglia Field.
