Stanford Bests Mavericks in OT, 2-1

OMAHA, Neb. – Stanford scored in the 95th minute of the game to hand the Omaha men's soccer team its second straight overtime heartbreaker, 2-1, on a rainy night at Caniglia Field.
The Mavericks fell to 0-2 on the year while the Cardinal concluded their season-opening Omaha road trip with a record of 1-1.
On the winning goal, a deflected shot from the left wing found Bobby Edwards in front. Josh Christensen stopped his shot, but Eric Verso knocked in the rebound at 94:22.
Christensen had several tough saves in the second half to keep the game tied. He finished with six saves on eight shots. Stanford's Andrew Epstein got the win with one save.
After playing a little more than 12 minutes, the two teams had to wait through a three-hour delay as strong thunderstorms rolled through eastern Nebraska.
When play resumed, Stanford took the lead in the 42nd minute when Bobby Edwards picked up the deflection of a centering feed from Danya Kafai and slipped it past Christensen.
The Mavericks tied the game in the 68th minute. Jake McCain threated a pass to a streaking Logan Mendez down the left wing. Mendez fired a shot by Epstein for his first goal of the season.
Christensen kept the game tied with just under 20 minutes to go in the second half when he stretched out to stop a shot from in close by Mark Verso.
Christensen made another strong save with less than eight minutes to go and got some help from teammate Michael Jaime who booted the rebound away as it headed toward the goal.
The Mavericks return to action on Friday, Sept. 5 when they host Cincinnati at 7:30 p.m.
