Denver holds off Omaha 2-0 in Summit League soccer
Oct 16, 2024 | Men's Soccer
DENVER, CO. - Denver regained their form at home to down visiting Omaha 2-0 in Summit League men's soccer. The #14 Pioneers (8-2-4, 3-1-0) were coming off their first two losses of the season before downing the Mavericks (6-4-3, 1-2-1), who return home Saturday for a critical rematch with Oral Roberts.Â
Denver dominated the flow of play in the opening half, outshooting Omaha (7-2 sh, 4-0 sog), equaling the lowest shots in a half for Omaha this season. The Mavericks didn't get their first shot of any kind until the 34th minute, when they already trailed 1-0. Denver drew first blood off a free kick, an opportunity created by a yellow card to Maguire Perkins. Denver scoring leader Sam Bassett's curling shot from outside left gave the Pioneers the lead 17:48 into the game. Jake Smith assisted.
The Pioneers became just the second team to take a two goal lead on Omaha this year when Kyle McGowan found too much room to work in front of the Mavericks goal in the 36th minute. He was assisted by Tyler Schommer and Bassett as Denver took a 2-0 lead to halftime.Â
The Mavericks once again found very little joy in their attack in the second half, as Denver limited Omaha chances. Omaha's first shot on goal didn't come until the 57th minute when Mathis Pilon St-Louis' shot was pulled in by Isaac Nehme. The Mavericks best chance came with about 11:00 to play as Omaha scoring leader Theo Klein took a free kick from straight on, just outside the box, driving a blast over the defensive wall and into the post at the top right hand corner. Omaha closed the chances gap in the second half, but still was outshot (13-9, 5-3 sog) for the match.
Omaha returns home to begin their second round of league matches as they host Oral Roberts at 4 p.m. CT Saturday at Caniglia Field. Kansas City defeated Oral Roberts Thursday night 2-1 in Tulsa.
Tickets for Omaha's two remaining home games are available at OMavs.com/tix. All remaining Mavericks games are scheduled for broadcast on the Summit League Network.
